Day 6. Lompoc to Ventura Beach. 86 Miles, 2500' of climbing.

Day Six in the morning.

Again, the Camp Services tent including Massage.

Riding out of Lompoc. There would be a 11 mile slight climb and then a four mile descent down to the coast.

The "climb"

Me and Evelyn at Rest Stop One. The overcast was now burning off. It was still cool.

The coast on the way to Rest Stop Two

We were held up at Rest Stop Two by the CHP. We were told we would be let go at 9 am. We weren't released until 10 am. By that time, there were two thousand of us waiting. I was about 500 back. This gentleman was totally retro. Very cool! He was a master rider that had one a masters race in Canada in the 60's.

v The beautiful coast on the way to Santa Barbara.

Lunch with Les in Santa Barbara

The beach! I love this day.

The Paradise Rest Stop on the south end of the Santa Barbara Beach. The cycling community come out and give us an unofficial rest stop, complete with massages, drinks and ice cream.

My friends from Berkeley, Nicole and her friend. Nicole (to the right of me) is a long time rider that couldn't ride this year, but came down for closing ceremonies. It was so good to see her.

After the Paradise rest Stop, the ride took us down through Carpinteria. Beautiful. Notice Eleanor on the wall.

The beautiful coast yet again on the way to Ventura Beach!

Rest Stop Four, Studio 4!

I love this section. Notice the train on the right and the RV's on the right.

  Riding into the Ventura Beach

Home in Ventura, our last night sleeping on the ground.  I think Kathryn is annoyed at me taking pictures :-)

Kathryn, all bundled up. I think she had five layers on. We would need to be warm for the candlelight ceremony coming up.

Imagine, Over 2,000 people on the beach with candles. It was so moving. Not a word was spoken. We eventually extinguished our candles in the ocean. I thought of my friend Steve Boutte' , a fellow cyclist who passed away recently. I dedicated my ride to the memory of Steve. I will miss Steve's smile and conversation. Rest In Peace Steve...
