Day Zero (Saturday 6/2/2007) - San Francisco at the Cow PalaceClick on the picture to expand
Day 0. The day before the ride starts. It is when you take your bike in and basically park it until you roll out on Day One. And you register, see a very important safety video, and get your tent assignment. In prior years, I would be there three hours at the most. This year I arrived at 10 am and left four hours later. For some reason, the lines were much longer.
The line to get started after you checked your bike in (the very first step of the process) wrapped around the front of an adjoining building at the Cow Palace. I waited in line with my friends Alfie and Lisa for about 45 minutes.
My friend Angie finally found me after much communicating by cell phone. This would be the last time I saw Angie for a brief moment on Day 6.
Lisa and Alfie, Fixed gear riders for the entire ride. I rode a single speed bike which is actually much easier to ride than a fixed gear bike. They also have one gear like me, however, their legs are always spinning where I can coast. I have a lot of respect for their skill and endurance. Real strong riders!
The throngs of riders getting registered.
Bike parking. It would be full in the morning.
