Ride Profile for Day Six, 90 miles - 2976' elevation climbed
Joe packing up his bag.
Our wonderful "G" gear truck roadies.
Another shot of our gear being loaded in the morning.
Heading out of Lompoc in the morning. It was, as usual, a cool, drizzly
morning.
The beautiful flowers of Lompoc leading out of camp.
Joe on the road and the first initial climb (it would be the hardest climb of
the day). It was very gradual but was 16 miles.
Even though the gradient was an average of 2-3%, my knees were burning. Of
course, my insistence in riding fast wasn't helping.
More of the climb.
And more...
Rest Stop #1. The summit would be one mile ahead.
Getting close
Scott, our summit barker was a welcome site
This is a very dangerous pass we had to negotiate through because of the
traffic of Highway One. I stopped to take this picture.
Finally, the coast headed towards the second rest stop. Notice the truck.
Rest Stop Two ahead. All riders were held here by CalTrans due to road work.
Even the fast riders were there, chomping at the bit.
My friend Glen Walling, me, and John.
Me and Glen. He was in the fast group (that I was chasing all day)
The word was out. CalTrans had promised to hold all riders until 9 AM. At
8:40, they let us go.
A rider who had crashed on Day Four on his face. He would not ride again.
John, taking the lead. I rode with Matt and John for a while. They were riding
at my pace which was fun.
Ginger, cheering us on.
Another shot of the coast. Along here, we were averaging 21 mph!
FLAT! I told Matt and John to go and I would meet them at lunch. My hope was
to catch them. Chase I did after a five minute tire change.
A left turn off the coast into the foothills of Santa Barbara
Lunch. I didn't catch them! The got there a few minutes before I did.
My friend Les after lunch riding into Santa Barbara proper.
I love Santa Barbara. This is the marina north of the beach.
The beach and pier.
More of the bike path were on.
Another rider we caught up with.
A rider who decided to get off and cheer us on.
Matt at a light
The fabulous "Paradise" rest stop that is put on by the city of Santa Barbara
every year. Ice Cream, candy, soft drinks, cookies, massages. We all look
forward to their incredible hospitality.
Matt with a volunteer at Paradise. He would get a 20 minute massage!
The ice cream table.
Pralines and Cream, my favorite. I had two!
Reluctantly, we had to get back on our bikes. Fortunately, it was early and we
were on a mission to finish!
A stop to get a bite.
At water stop before entering Highway 101 which would be very, very fast.
Out on the road. We were averaging 26 mph for a few miles. NICE!
At Rest Stop #4, my friend Rowdy, who was another rider who was a roadie this
year. Again, he'd rather be riding. Being a roadie was too much work! Oh,
their theme was the Playboy Mansion.
Me and a "bunny".
"Hef" and his "mate".
Me, doing who knows what...
Back on the road. Miles of RV's parked on the beach.
The entrance to the last bike bath leading up to the Ventura camp site.
Soon, we'd be home.
The camp! Out last for this years ride.
Me in camp with my gear strapped to my back. Last night.
