Day Three (Tuesday 6/6/2006) - King City to Paso RoblesClick on the picture to expand
Ride profile for Day Three. 76.8 miles with 2280' of elevation climbed
Headed out of the King City campgrounds. Most riders were concerned about the dreaded Quad Buster Hill which would come in 21 miles. Me? The roads. Totally sucked. The roads are heavily used by agri-trcks and are never repaired. I was concerned on how my brand new wheel set would handle these terrible roads. They did just fine. I purposely don't top of my air on this day because I want as much shock absorption as possible.
After doing some climbs and enduring the crappy roads, we made it to Rest Stop #1 which is right before Quad Buster Hill. The pigs were behind me getting ready to head up.
The start of the 8-10% climb for about 1/2 mile. It's not that bad except there is no relief. Riders were passing me and I was passing some.
This rider has her iPod hooked up to a megaphone. Now that is what I call inspiration. I loved it!
On the backside of the QB Hill which is a gradual descent into Fort Hunter Liggett. This part is really beautiful and quite fast.
The road was a bit rough again and would not improve (it was still better than it had been in the morning).
The other Dan from the Diablo Cyclists. We were the only riders representing the Walnut Creek bicycle club.
The beautiful trees were gone. It was now sunny and would turn into a very warm day which gave me more incentive to get to camp as quickly as possible. I don't do well in the heat. Fortunately, it was quite comfortable at the moment.
This was the crew that picked me up the day before after my...incident. They were checking on me since I was pulled over taking the following picture.
I knew the lunch stop in the town of Bradley was coming up. That was Highway 101 in the distance.
The entrance to 101 which we would ride on for a couple of miles.
Bradley. This town looks forward to us riding through every year. We actually provide them a big chuck on their income. They sell t-shirts, goodies and hamburgers to the riders. I passed and had the usual ALC lunch provided which was usually a chicken or turkey sandwich.
Riding out on River Road before getting into Paso Robles, our next home for the evening.
Riding into camp. I think it was 1:15 PM. Tonight, some of us would have Bar-B-Q in a great restaurant across the street from the campgrounds. Despite my crash, I was riding strong. My only problem was sleeping on the ground.
