We woke at 3:15 AM. Why? The sprinklers for the camp ground came on. Our tent was right next to one of those huge industrial sprinklers. Luckily, we were slightly uphill of it and our tent did not get flooded immediately. Others were not as lucky. We dragged our tent to a dirt road that was not getting wet. And no, the sprinklers did not get turned off. Apparently they had started at 2:20 AM. One rider was covering the sprinklers with garbage cans. He was our hero.

Our tent on the dry, dirt road. Surprisingly, we fell asleep for about 45 minutes and it was a very comfortable sleep. The tent was of course, trashed.

The road on the way to the agricultural fields of the Salinas Valley. It would be a long but flat day with a 40 mile tailwind.

Rest Stop One at mile 18.5. The theme was Star Wars.

Paul wondering which delicious morsels he was craving for.

Darth Vader with orange tennies...

Paula and I stopped at the famed artichoke stop to try fried artichokes at 9 AM.

Yum. And yes, I paid for it later. BIG TIME!

Paul looking for his bike at Lunch at mile 38.2.

Me doing same.

Riding on G17 headed towards King City. Flat but beautiful.

Kermit.

Me and Kermit. A few years ago this gentleman was the Energizer Bunny banging a pink drum in the middle of nowhere. It seems he was a school teacher out supporting the ride.

Paul with this lovely belly dancer at the Mission La Soledad Water Stop at mile 68.5.

And me.

Paul getting ready to go.

The bridge at mile 78 where riders have been known to skinny dip. Not us, believe me. We then turned left into the famous Greenville Crosswind. It's been known to knock down cyclists.

A couple of miles up the road, the infamous "Cookie Lady" was waiting with her great cookies and goodies.  She's been doing this for years.

The Cookie Ladies "friends".

This was my favorite stop. Rest Stop Four at mile 84. The theme was the Secret Service. These people did not crack a smile. I heard they evacuated the porta potties because of a bomb threat. And while checking my bike and back side for explosives with the mirror on the pole you see in the picture, another agent came over to see what the sit rep was. The agent with the mirror was having a problem with my examination because his mirror wasn't wide enough... OUCH!!!

Agents. They even had business cards.

The agents profiles.

Too funny...

Notes on the front of the porta potty.

Note inside said potty.

Me and an agent.
